OXFORD WEDDING AT ST MARY’S CHURCH WITH PRIVATE GARDEN RECEPTION
A + F
As an Oxford wedding photographer, these are the kind of celebrations I’m always drawn to, a traditional ceremony in one of the city’s historic churches, followed by a relaxed and beautifully considered rustic and classical reception at a private family home. Alice and Fred, who met at university in the town were married at St Mary’s Church in Oxford, with 190 guests joining them for a summer day that moved seamlessly from the calm of the morning at home to a joyful garden celebration filled with long tables, music and an easy, generous atmosphere.
GETTING READY AT HOME IN OXFORDSHIRE
ST MARY’S CHURCH, OXFORD CEREMONY
The ceremony took place at St Mary’s Church, right at the heart of Oxford. With its historic architecture and sense of scale, it brings a real feeling of occasion, particularly with a larger gathering of guests. Despite the formality of the setting, the ceremony itself felt warm and personal, with moments of laughter and connection that carried through the space.
GARDEN RECEPTION AT A PRIVATE FAMILY HOME
After the ceremony, everyone returned to the family home for a garden reception. With 190 guests, the space was transformed with a marquee, long tables and a relaxed flow between indoors and out. Summer garden weddings like this have a particular rhythm, drinks on the lawn, music carrying through the evening, and a sense that the day can unfold naturally. It’s always a pleasure to photograph celebrations like this, where the atmosphere is as important as the details.
“An effortlessly elegant summer celebration in the heart of Oxford.”

Weddings at The University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford
The University Church of St Mary the Virgin is one of Oxford's most extraordinary wedding ceremony venues. Standing at the heart of the High Street since the thirteenth century, it predates the university that grew up around it — and that sense of deep, layered history is something you feel throughout the day. The soaring nave, the ancient stone, the peals of bells across the city — there is simply nowhere quite like it for a wedding ceremony.
What makes St Mary's so remarkable to photograph is the quality of light through the nave and the sheer scale of the space. From the intimate moment of the vows to guests filling the pews beneath those arched ceilings, every stage of the ceremony has a natural grandeur. And outside, the Radcliffe Camera directly opposite and the cobbled lanes of central Oxford give you some of the most beautiful portrait settings in the country.
If you're planning a wedding at St Mary the Virgin and looking for a photographer who works in a natural, documentary style, you can explore more of my work in my wedding photography portfolio.
Planning a wedding in Oxford - FAQs
-
Yes. St Mary's has a long tradition of weddings and services of dedication, and whether you're planning a quiet, intimate ceremony in the Chancel or a larger, flower-filled wedding in the Nave, the church works to accommodate each couple's requirements. An early enquiry is recommended as the legal requirements vary couple to couple.
-
The site has held a church since Anglo-Saxon times — long before the concept of a university existed in England — and this largely thirteenth-century building still dominates the High Street today. It's considered one of the oldest university buildings in the world and stands as the spiritual heart of the oldest university in Britain. Marrying here is genuinely stepping into centuries of history.
-
The church can offer the services of a professional choir and mark the occasion with peals of bells from one of the most beautiful spires in Oxford. For couples who care about the atmosphere of their ceremony, the music at St Mary's is one of its real strengths.
-
It's an extraordinary space to photograph. The thirteenth-century interior has a scale and grandeur that very few London churches can match, and the light through the nave during a ceremony is beautiful. Outside, the High Street setting — with the Radcliffe Camera just across the road — gives you one of the most recognisable backdrops in England for couple portraits. The tower also offers remarkable views across the Oxford skyline for those willing to climb it.

Oxford has a strong range of reception venues within easy reach. The city's college dining halls, riverside restaurants along the Thames, and various country houses just outside the city are all popular choices. The Radcliffe Camera sits directly next to the church, and the meadows at Christ Church are a short walk away — both offer beautiful settings for portraits between ceremony and reception.

The church is on the High Street, Oxford, OX1 4BJ — right in the centre of the city, surrounded by university buildings and within easy walking distance of Oxford's colleges, restaurants, and hotels. It's one of the most central and accessible wedding ceremony venues in Oxford.
