Wedding photography in Bermuda

I’m used to globetrotting to cover weddings and events for my couples and clients but usually within Europe so I was thrilled to hear Fromm Theresa asking if I would travel to Bermuda to shoot her wedding last summer. Both Theresa and Linton live on Bermuda and the resort they had chosen to host their wedding was very familiar to them. The Reefs is perched up on a cliff overlooking the private beach. It feels intimate and private and the service was a step up from what I’m used to in Europe. By the second day staff were calling me by my name.

The Reefs has a very special ceremony location; Caso’s Point, a deck set over the sea which gives panoramic views of the ocean and the resort behind.

Getting Married at The Reefs

The Reef’s offers two wedding reception locations - their beachside restaurant and bar, Coconuts or the Ocean Echo Restaurant which is up in the hotel and is more enclosed. It’s an intimate venue and so weddings tend to be up to around 85 people. Theresa and Linton had only 50 guests which made the whole day feel incredibly intimate and I quickly felt at home with such a friendly and warm crowd. There was constant laughter throughout and some brilliant dance floor action - most notably from Theresa’s granny.

I was shooting alone so lots of running around in some quite warm heat but I mostly captured the bride and bridesmaids getting ready in the bridal suite overlooking the deck and the ocean.

Bermuda’s Mystical Moongates

I discovered on this visit that Bermuda has at least 40 fascinating architectural structures dotted around. the island - the fabled moongate, one of Bermuda’s national symbols. It traces it’s roots to China and is supposed to bring great luck to newlyweds if they step through the moongate hand in hand and happiness will endure. They are made of local limestone and require considerable expertise to make. They are reputed to have been started in 1860 when a sea captain returned from China and was inspired by his visits to gardens there. Among Chinese nobles, closed doors were not considered courteous since they implied exclusions.
